Swan-Canning Estuary Shelfish Reef Restoration Project

Responding to algae blooms in the Swan River (Derbal Yerrigan), The Nature Conservancy originally engaged JMC to install trial artificial limestone reefs as habitats for mussel shellfish, which filter the river's water.

Given the trial's effectiveness in improving water quality and producing thriving marine habitats, we were then commissioned to install 11,500 tonnes of these reefs in a full-scale operation.

This required strict operational criteria to minimise environmental effects (e.g., decreasing sand plumes), as well as land and maritime logistical issues, all while protecting Aboriginal tradition.

JMC is extremely proud of its accomplishments in promoting a sustainable ecology in our local waters.
